What’s Counter Absurdity?

Counter Absurdity is an eclectic online fanzine inspired by a passionate interest in Urban Roots music, language, literature, politics, and history. The name of the project is drawn from the life and example of folk singer and activist Phil Ochs. In the 1960’s and ‘70’s Ochs explored more creative ways to articulate dissent, advocate political change and tune people in to their true potential as free individuals. He sought to satirise the absurdity of his times in his music – to expose the absurd by means of the absurd…

“Je vous trouve très beau…”

The content is written by Kevin Deegan, a writer, translator and historian based in Berlin (that’s me, reluctantly photographed on the left, there). My roots are in the Atlantic Isles (second-generation Irish, raised in England), whilst my outlook on life has been formed through many years living elsewhere and sharing my life with people from many other places. Counter Absurdity provides an outlet for sources of “creative dissent” – either in music or other art forms. I write about bands and musicians as well as literary and historical figures I regard as kindred spirits – who provide inspiration for the way I interpret the world and a shared view of one I aspire to live in.

Forthcoming in January / February 2018: Urban Roots Music: Gwenno, Welsh-language underground music,   Urban Folk Rock: The Manchester Irish Underground…
